An important part of developing a personalized treatment plan for breast augmentation is selecting the right type of breast implants. At our practice serving Lubbock, Texas and the surrounding areas, Dr. Miguel Gallegos guides patients through the vast array of breast implant options available to them and helps them select the one best suited for their goals and physical characteristics.
Types of Breast Implants
There are two main types of breast implants: saline and silicone. Saline implants are composed of an outer shell of silicone and are filled with a sterile salt water solution. Because they do not come pre-filled, saline implants often require a smaller incision. Silicone implants have an outer shell made of silicone-rubber that is filled with a silicone gel. The gel is made to mimic the consistency of human breast tissue, providing a natural texture and appearance.
Breast Implant Shape
Implants come in two basic shapes: round and teardrop. As their name suggests, round implants are round in shape. Generally suitable for the vast majority of patients, round implants are softer and move like natural breast tissue. Teardrop implants are designed to mimic the natural shape of the breast and may be appropriate for women with very little breast tissue. Dr. Gallegos will help you decide which breast implant shape is right for you during a consultation at our Lubbock-area cosmetic surgery practice.
Breast Implant Profile
The “profile” of a breast implant refers to how far it projects from the chest wall. A low profile implant will have a wider base width and less projection than a moderate or high profile implant. The implant profile that Dr. Gallegos recommends for each individual patient is determined by her chest wall and breast dimensions as well as the outcome she desires.
