Breast Augmentation, sometimes referred to as a Boob Job, is one of the US’ most common cosmetic procedures. If someone is thinking of getting a breast reduction or augmentation, below are several important things to know before the procedure. 1.) Patients Have Their Choice of Implants There are two types: silicone gel and saline implants, and each has its own benefits and drawbacks. Patients must be over age 18 to receive saline implants, and over the age of 22 to get silicone breast implants. As of 2014, 77% of all implants were silicone. These feel and look realistic, unlike saline implants which can ripple in some cases. However, leak detection is easier with saline implants. 2.) Not all Surgeons are Board-Certified When undergoing Plastic Surgery of any kind, patients must choose a licensed, professional surgeon. Friends and family members are a great source of recommendations, but research is important as well. Potential patients should ensure that their surgeons belong to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and other professional associations. 3.) Breast Implants Aren’t a One-Time Procedure As previously mentioned, breast implants can leak. Additionally, weight loss and pregnancy can affect the shape of a patient’s breasts. Almost 25% of women will need an additional surgery in about ten years because breast implants do not last forever. 4.) Patients Must be Healthy to Get Implants If a patient is obese, has a smoking habit or a family history of breast cancer, they may not be a good candidate for implant surgery. The patient’s health status can cause negative effects during or after surgery. Therefore, it’s wise to be honest with the surgeon about medications, past surgeries and lifestyle habits. 5.) It’s Possible to Try Different Sizes Most cosmetic surgery clinics offer what is referred to as ‘sizers’. These neoprene, bead-filled sacs can be inserted into the patient’s bra. This simple procedure can help the patient decide which implant size will work best. 6.) Risks of Breast Implants Asymmetry, deflation and bleeding are some of the biggest risks of breast implants. Although it’s rare, cancer and infection risks do exist, and […]
When someone decides to have Breast Augmentation done to enhance the appearance of their chest, they may wonder what type of breast augmentation recovery they will be dealing with when their surgery is completed. It is important to take care of all household tasks before having this type of surgery as it may take a few weeks of resting before the person feels good enough to tend to their normal routine. Pay bills, clean the home, catch up on laundry, and make sure there is plenty of food available in the home before going to the surgical procedure. It is a good idea to enlist help from a friend for a few days after the surgery as well. After the Surgery After the surgery is completed, the patient will need to rest comfortably in the hospital and then at their home after they are released. They should have several pillows available on their bed so they can support their back when they try sitting up. They should rest as much as possible in the days after the surgery. The doctor will most likely wrap the breasts with an ace bandage or gauze. They may require this stays in place for a day or two, so the results of the augmentation will not be able to be seen right away. This is a minor inconvenience but is important for the healing process. When the gauze is removed, the person may notice swelling, irregular shaped breasts, or bruising in the area where the surgical procedure was performed. This is normal and will subside. There will most likely be some pain and discomfort when the person tries doing tasks requiring them to move their pectoral muscles. Taking their time and asking for help with these tasks is best. They may also experience some burning sensations, itching, and numbness in the breasts. This will also subside as the healing process takes place. If someone is interested in having this type of Plastic Surgery themselves, the best way to get more information about the process is speaking with Dr. Gallegos by making an appointment for […]
“Snooki & JWoww” ended their popular series on MTV in early February, and what was getting all the attention? Jenni Farley’s amazing post-baby body. The former “Jersey Shore” beauty shared her figure on Instagram — see the photo here, from OK Magazine — just six months after giving birth to her daughter, Meilani. Farley had her first breast augmentation about 10 years ago at age 21, and had them touched up after breastfeeding. “I love them,” she said. “They’re the same size, I just kind of switched them out from breastfeeding and everything. I’ll do another one in a few years [after I’ve had more children].” New mothers are often thrilled by the experience of having a child, but not so pleased with the impact pregnancy and breastfeeding has on their bodies. Restoring the shape and perkiness of the breasts can be achieved with a breast lift and/or breast augmentation. While other types of plastic surgery are declining, the number of breast augmentation surgeries in the United States have grown by more than 40 percent over the last decade, according to American Society of Plastic Surgeries. In fact, more than 300,000 such surgeries are performed each year. Obviously, women are still interested in enhancing their body image with larger breasts. However, like any surgery, breast augmentation has its pluses and minuses. Reasons to having breast augmentation surgery The chief benefit of having breast implant surgery is improving a woman’s self image. Pregnancy, aging and weight loss can all affect the shape and firmness of a woman’s breasts. Breast augmentation surgery can help to turn back the hands of time and give a woman a more youthful figure. Such surgery is generally safe and poses few risks of complications in healthy women. Reasons against having breast implants As with any surgery, breast augmentation has some inherent risks. Unlike most surgeries, however, with breast implant surgery, you are taking an otherwise healthy person and subjecting them to the (generally small) risks of infection, a reaction to the anesthetic and post-operative bleeding. If a women has other underlying health issues, such as diabetes or heart disease, these can increase the risk of complications and should be discussed with her surgeon well in advance of the procedure. Breast implant surgery can also lead to capsular contracture, a condition where the scar tissue surrounding the implant becomes hardened and can be painful and mis-shape the breast. If this happens, a second surgery is necessary to correct the issue. Potential for Complications Because of the potential for complications, it’s wise for you and your doctor to carefully weigh your individual risk with the anticipated benefits. It’s also important to choose your physician with care and investigate his or her experience, past performance with breast augmentation and training. Thousands of women each year have successful breast augmentation surgery. If you are considering such a procedure, do your homework, consider the pros and cons and enjoy your new shape for years to come.
