Spider Vein Removal

Spider Vein Removal with the MediSpa at Hermosa Plastic Surgery

Spider veins are caused by a malfunction of the valves inside the tubes that carry blood throughout the circulatory system. When these valves do not work properly, blood will pool up in one area of the vein. This causes swelling in the area as well as unsightly bluish markings on the skin over the veins.

The Procedure

Sclerotherapy is a procedure some people use to aid in the discomfort, pain, and appearance of the area where the veins are located. This is a non-invasive procedure that is done in a doctor’s office setting. Spider Vein Removal of this nature is usually the first action taken and is usually quite successful.

A chemical is injected into the affected veins with the use of an injection. The chemical will cause the veins in this area to collapse. When this happens, other veins in the area will become dominant. The affected veins will continue to shrink and the coloring will begin to fade. Several treatments will need to be done to make sure the veins disintegrate in full. Over time the coloring fades away and the pain associated with the veins will no longer be present.

Possible Side Effects

After each session, the person having the procedure done may notice some swelling or discoloration in the area of the injection. This will subside after a few days. The doctor may recommend the patient wrap the affected area with tape or compression stockings can be used. Keeping the area tightly wrapped will help in the reduction of swelling.

The doctor will recommend that the patient stop smoking before the procedure. They should also stop taking aspirin, herbal medicines, and acetaminophen. The procedure itself will not require the use of medication or anesthesia. A gentle pain reliever may be prescribed afterward to help with pain from swelling if necessary.
