Just a small amount of extra fat in the upper throat area can create the presence of a "double chin," a trait that is often unwanted by both women and men. The additional pockets of fat beneath the chin (known as the submental area) can be caused by aging, weight fluctuations, or genetics that lead to a softer jawline and chin for a less defined profile. Albuquerque, NM board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Miguel Gallegos provides a revolutionary method of fat cell reduction to eliminate neck fat at Hermosa Plastic Surgery with Kybella. Approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), Kybella is a new nonsurgical procedure for upper neck fat performed with a series of injections of deoxycholic acid (DA). The active component in Kybella is a manmade version of DA, which works similarly to the body's natural DA to dissolve and absorb fat cells. After it is injected below the chin, you can see a visible decrease in the volume of fat. When the fat is eliminated, the cells do not reform so you can enjoy your new slimmer neck and clear jawline for years to come.
Kybella Ideal Candidates
The ideal candidates for Kybella treatments have additional fat in the upper throat (submental area), which creates unwanted fullness or a double chin. This injection addresses resistant sections of fat that can't be minimized with usual weight loss techniques due to genetics, aging, or several other conditions. If you are at or near a healthy, stable weight, but exercise and diet have not worked to remove the fat in your neck, Kybella may be the procedure to address your needs. While Kybella may address small or moderate pockets of fat in the upper neck, larger pockets of fat may be better suited for surgical neck liposuction at Hermosa Plastic Surgery.

"Dr Gallegos is the best plastic surgeon in Albuquerque, I’ve been to others and he has done the best job in the state of New Mexico I had a breast augmentation... Amazing the scars are so fine lined you have to practically get a scope to see the scars. I was so pleased with his work that I had to have a tummy tuck.. a month later, it’s Amazing how I have healed in such a short time. Dr. Gallegos is extremely detailed with proficiency it’s unbelievable, I’ve had many many clients that have gone to many surgeons in the Albuquerque area and that is why I wanted Dr . Gallegos I didn’t want my body looking anything like in a horror movie. In all honesty if I could post the jobs he has done on my body I would, you wouldn’t question his work. Kybella Procedure Technique
Kybella is completed during an appointment in one of our treatment rooms. Dr. Gallegos will generally apply a numbing cream to the treated area, if preferred, once the skin is cleansed. The injection lasts around 15 minutes, which comprises of multiple small injections into the upper neck area. Patients may need a single treatment to achieve their desired goal while other patients may require several injections spaced three weeks between each appointment at Hermosa Plastic Surgery.
Kybella What to Expect
Kybella treatments do not require general anesthesia so you can leave our office when you are ready to return to your usual routine. You may experience short-term bruising, numbness, or swelling beneath your chin; however, this shouldn't last more than 2 – 3 days. Contact Hermosa Plastic Surgery right away if you are feeling any unusual symptoms, like difficulty swallowing, facial muscle weakness, or if your facial expressions are uneven. While the fat that is eliminated does not regenerate, the cells that remain can get larger so you must keep a stable weight after your Kybella treatments to keep new pockets of fat from developing. Ideal results after this procedure leave your neck appearing sleeker and tighter, and your neckline should be better defined.
How much does Kybella cost?
Your costs for Kybella will vary based on the number of sessions you will require. During your initial consultation, a personalized Kybella treatment plan will be developed to fit your budget and goals. A team member will also talk about payments we accept during your first appointment.
How does Kybella work?
Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in Kybella, is designed to break down fat cells in the submental area only. Once the fat cells are eliminated, these cells cannot regenerate. This is why more injections shouldn't be needed as soon as you have finished the series.
Can Kybella be used to treat other areas of the body?
Kybella is an effective treatment for reducing and breaking down fat cells in the chin and neck area. Right now, Kybella can only be used to treat the submental area as it has not been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for any other areas of the face or body.
Am I eligible for a Kybella treatment?
Before your consultation, you will need to answer a few questions to make sure you are a candidate for Kybella treatments. You need to be at least 18 years old, not breastfeeding or pregnant, and you should not have an active infection in or around your neck. Before the procedure is performed, you are encouraged to be open about your medical history and any health concerns so that Dr. Gallegos or a member of his team can determine if you may be at risk for an adverse reaction from the treatment.
How many treatment sessions will I need?
During your initial consultation, a personalized Kybella treatment plan will be developed to match your needs. Typically, patients receive between 2 – 4 Kybella injections (no more than six) to achieve their goals. Kybella injections need to be performed around 30 days apart.
