About Cosmetic Ear Surgery
Ears that stick out, appear asymmetrical, misshapen, or overly large can affect your self-confidence, especially as you age. Cosmetic ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a procedure designed to reshape and resize the ears for a more balanced and pleasing appearance. Dr. Miguel Gallegos, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Albuquerque, NM, has helped many adults and children overcome their insecurities by performing otoplasty. This surgery allows patients to feel confident showing their face from any angle. If you or someone you know—perhaps a child—is concerned about ear appearance, contact us to schedule a consultation with Dr. Gallegos to learn more about otoplasty.
Request an AppointmentAm I a Candidate for Cosmetic Ear Surgery?
Ear surgery can be performed at almost any age but is especially common in children and recommended before they start elementary school. The procedure is safe and effective for children as young as six years old. Adults who are unhappy with ears that protrude or are misshapen may also be excellent candidates for otoplasty. Additionally, those with damaged or stretched earlobes might benefit from cosmetic ear surgery.
How Is Ear Surgery Performed?
Cosmetic ear surgery is typically done under anesthesia. Incisions are usually made behind the ear or within the natural folds of the ear to minimize visible scarring. During the procedure, cartilage may be reshaped, removed, or added to create a natural and balanced ear contour. Both ears are often treated to ensure symmetry. After reshaping, the incisions are closed with sutures and the area is bandaged to protect the ears during healing.
